Historical context of the pieze
King Oenomaus challenged the contender for his daughter Hippodamia’s hand in marriage to a chariot race. Oenomaus wished to avoid the oracle as it had been predicted that his son-in-law would kill him.

Pelops was victorious thanks to the golden chariot pulled by Pegasus, witnessing the death of Oenomaus when his chariot fell apart.
